    In this issue Features 4 Pioneers in One Health At the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, the history of One Health goes back more than 50 years. The college’s One Health pioneers discuss its origins and how it has evolved. Building on a strong foundation, members of the next generation of One Health veterinarians discuss their work in comparative medicine and public health. 12 Wildlife and One Health Veterinarians specializing in wildlife and ecosystem health have been instrumental in understanding and controlling threats ranging from West Nile virus and avian influenza to lead poisoning and invasive species. Regents Allocate More Funds to Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory A much-needed $1.6 million is allocated to the VDL. College Celebrates Research Day The annual Points of Pride Research Day celebrates research programs,researchers, and research partners. 11 Welcoming President and Mrs. Kaler University of Minnesota President Eric Kaler and his wife, Karen, visit the College and return a bald eagle to the wild at the Fall Raptor Release. 12 Donor Honor Roll A special thank-you to the College’s donors 14 Veterinary Research Aids Human Trials An experimental treatment for brain cancer first used in dogs is now being tried in humans. 15 CVM Part of Teaching and Research Initiative in China The College is part of an international consortium of veterinary schools. China Swine Conference Planned The College plans to bring the annual Leman Swine Conference to China, the world’s largest pork-producing country. The procedure was part of an experimental therapy that also included gene therapy and the administration of a vaccine created by John Ohlfest, director of the University’s translational neurosurgery gene therapy program.
