In this first episode of Tucker Center Talks, Nicole LaVoi, Director of The Tucker Center for Research of Girls and Women in Sport introduces the work of the Tucker Center, in terms of who we are and what we do in our research, outreach and educational programming. Nicole outlines some of the topics we have lined up for you in the coming months. We’d also like to hear from you! What topics about research on girls and women in sport would you like for us to cover? What issues, research, ideas or topics would like the Tucker Team to discuss on this podcast. We are open to your suggestions. As the leading research center for girls and women in sport in the world, we want to leverage our knowledge, data and network of scholars and practitioners to inform a wider audience about women and girls in sport.
Tucker Center Talks: S1E2 - Dr. Mary Jo Kane, Founder of the Tucker Center

In this episode Tucker Center director Dr. Nicole LaVoi talks to the founder and first director of the Tucker Center, Dr. Mary Jo Kane who explains the original story of the Tucker Center. They also discusses her seminal piece of research known as the “sport as continuum” paper. If you want to brush up, read the original 1995 paper (and you should because it’s a good one) or the 2017 reflection piece that she wrote on the impact of her sport continuum theory. We also hear how the sport continuum theory may be applied to the current topic of, and debate surrounding, inclusion of transgender athletes. You can read Dr. Austin Stair Calhoun’s, TC affiliated scholar, 2017 OpEd on her perspective on the complexities on applying and revisiting the sport as continuum theory.

In this episode of Tucker Center Talks, Dr. Nicole M. LaVoi talks with Dr. Austin Stair Calhoun, a Tucker Center Affiliated Scholar and currently the Chief of Staff at the University of Minnesota Medical School Education. We talk about our research together pertaining to family narratives in online coaching biographies of collegiate coaches and her dissertation on the gatekeepers who decide what and how online coaching biographies are written. We discuss new data 10 years later, why erasing same-sex family narratives matters in perpetuating homophobia and heterosexism, and the implications for athletic administrators.

They discuss the business model of women’s sport and what needs to be done to advance equity in women’s sport.

Nicole talks to her new colleague and fellow college tennis player Dr. Dunja Antunovic, who will join her in the Tucker Center in the fall of 2020. Dunja is currently finishing out her stint in Sports Communication at the Charley Steiner School of Sports Communication at Bradley University. They discuss her areas of research around representation of women in sports media, women in sport journalism and Dunja’s new forthcoming book (with TC affiliated scholar Dr. Cheryl Cooky) which in part covers narratives of progress and failure for women’s sport. We end with three ‘sticky’ ideas from her research.

Specifically they discuss barriers for black women in coaching, lack of representation, the power of being fully and authentically seen, and the untold stories of the women that came before them. They also discuss their current and upcoming research projects, that you won’t want to miss. And they conclude with a call to action for everyone, and advice to young women who may want to pursue a similar career path; we are all here to uplift you.

Tucker Center Talks: S2E14 - Disruptions in Women's Sport

On this episode, Nicole talks to Dr. Ann Pegoraro, the Lang Chair in Sport Management at the University of Guelph in Canada. Her research focuses mainly on sport consumers, marketing and communication, including all forms of media. Dr. Pegoraro is also the co-director of the newly formed Canadian national research network for gender equity in sport. They announce an initiative; #disruptHERS, a social media campaign in women’s sport. #disruptHERS will highlight why disruptions to the normative male model of sport matters, and they will discuss with each other and colleagues the most current issues of disruptions.

Nicole welcomes back Dr. Nancy Lough (@dr_nlo) from S1E5 & Dr. Ann Pegoraro (@SportMgmtProf) from S2E14 and a new guest Dr. Katie Lebel (@katelebel). They discuss why women’s teams have been more successful in return to play than their male counterparts and current disruptions in women’s sport, including Sue Bird & Megan Rapinoe, WNBA, LPGA and TitleIXSchools.com and why it matters. On this week’s episode, Nicole talks to colleague Dr. Gyasmine George-Williams “Dr. G” who is an activist, socio-cultural higher education practitioner, and Assistant Professor at the University of La Verne. She earned her bachelor’s in Psychology from California State University, Los Angeles, a Masters in College Counseling and Student Development and Masters in Educational Counseling, both from the University of La Verne, and a PhD in Higher Education from Azusa Pacific University. She serves on the Black Scholars Advisory Board, Black Faculty and Staff Association, and is a faculty partner to La Verne’s Intercollegiate Athletics Committee. Her research and passion includes athlete and student activism, student-faculty interaction among students of color, women of color in leadership, and critical race theory in higher education. Dr. George-Williams is the founder of GGW Consulting and has created evidenced-based models to honor and center the experiences and leadership of activists of color and disenfranchised groups. Dr. G. was part of a scholarly panel for the Fall 2020 Tucker Center Distinguished Lecture Series where she talked about the Activism Growth Model (AGM). We explore the development and theoretical underpinning of the AGM and the Black Athlete Activist Leadership (BAAL) Model.

On this week’s episode, Nicole talks to three advocates, scholars, collaborators, colleagues and #disruptHERS — Dr. Nancy Lough, Dr. Ann Pegoraro and Dr. Katie Lebel — about recent disruptions in sport, as they relate to women and politics. The women talk about how the recent U.S. elections intersect with women in leadership, how the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) athlete’s activism continues to disrupt opportunities in merchandise and sponsorship, challenging sport as a unifier narrative, and the importance of the increased visibility of female athletes.

We hear her express more in depth about some points she made during the lecture, and answer some audience questions we didn’t get to on the night. We conclude with her advice to young female scholars.
