Abstract
GERD is a disease which affects millions of people worldwide. It is caused by a relaxation in a special muscle located between the esophagus and stomach, called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). When the LES relaxes stomach acid is allowed to return into the esophagus which causes symptoms of heartburn. There are diet changes and lifestyle modifications which can be tried along with prescription medications to relieve the symptoms.
