Abstract
Relative Zebra Mussel abundance on various substrates was surveyed in June 2021 in White Bear Lake, Ramsey County, MN, USA. This survey was designed to create a training dataset to relate acoustic data to substrate and mussel coverage. Transect sites were selected using underwater video to include a range of different substrate types and Zebra Mussel coverage. The final dataset provides a relatively high resolution survey (0.25 sq meter) of percent mussel coverage and substrate type that can inform studies of Zebra Mussel habitat and distribution.
Description
Relative Zebra Mussel density was surveyed by divers along 21 transect lines, each 20 m in length over different sediment types. Sampling occurred from June 15 to June 24, 2021. SCUBA divers placed 1- sq meter quadrats subdivided into 0.25- sq meter sections on each side of the transect line. The divers surveyed each 0.25- sq meter section noting the percentage of the bottom covered by live and dead Zebra Mussels, submerged mussel coverage style (sparse, patchy, continuous), macrophyte percentage, and substrate type (silt, silt/sand mix, sand, gravel, cobble, and rock/boulder). In addition, divers noted the presence of live Zebra Mussels at the base of any macrophytes in the sampling area. Zebra Mussel coverage was not surveyed on vertical macrophyte surfaces. After recording the data the 1- sq meter quadrats were moved one meter along the transect and the data collection process was repeated. This resulted in 40 1- sq meter quadrats and 160 0.25- sq meter sections sampled along each transect.
