Item The addition of Lactobacilli to oral metronidazole therapy compared to metronidazole monotherapy increases the cure rate of bacterial vaginosis (BV).(2008-09-02) Quail, JacobThere is increasing evidence that BV is associated with severe gynecological and obstetrical complications. Because of these adverse associations and the high recurrence rates noted with antibiotic treatment there has been a continuing search for more efficacious treatments.Item Advanced treatment technologies that remove solids from municipal wastewater consistently meet mercury effluent limits.(2022-06) Hogan, KelseySince many other sources of mercury (Hg) are difficult to control, the removal of Hg from wastewater is an essential component of maintaining low Hg levels in ecosystems. Numerous studies have investigated solid-liquid interactions of Hg at ng/L levels in natural systems, but few studies have translated insights to highly-engineered, organic-rich systems such as municipal wastewater treatment plants. There is a lack of guidance for design engineers concerned with meeting exceptionally low-level Hg limits, particularly the 1.8 ng/L limit applicable to the Laurentian Great Lakes. A historic Minnesota Pollution Control Agency dataset from over 150 municipal wastewater treatment plants (MWWTP) was analyzed and categorized into technology types. Starting with secondary technology types and continuing to tertiary technology types, Hg concentrations from MWWTP in each technology type were analyzed to indicate if there are technologies that reliably reduce HgT in the effluent to below 1.8 ng/L. Additionally, correlations between total suspended solids (TSS) and HgT (total Hg) were evaluated. Certain technology types were better at removing HgT than others. Secondary technologies including conventional activated sludge, MBRs, and polishing ponds as well as tertiary technologies including fine dual media filters, rotating cloth membrane, and deep bed mono-media filters all consistently meet low-level HgT discharge limits. Effluent HgT measurements were correlated with TSS for several secondary technologies with a hydraulic residence time similar to conventional activated sludge, while technologies with very short (attached growth) or very long (ponds) showed little relation between TSS and HgT in effluent water. Nonparametric statistics were used to compare the effluent HgT among technologies and estimate the reliability of meeting mercury limits. The results of this study could help MWWTP determine appropriate technologies to install to meet regional or state mercury discharge limits.Item Asthma Treatment: Do I need a nebulizer?(2009-05-04) Donahue, ReneeAsthma is chronic respiratory disease commonly treated using inhaled beta-agonist medications, or bronchodilators, such as albuterol. Medical research has shown that for the treatment of asthma with betaagonists, inhalers are equally as effective as nebulizers. Either treatment is helpful at reducing the symptoms of asthma which may include wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath and cough. Inhalers have some practical benefits over nebulizers for everyday use as inhalers are faster to use, are less expensive and do not require a power source or regular maintenance.Item The basics every patient needs to know about Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea(2008-09-02) Lieser, MatthewThe purpose of this article was to provide patients with background information about Clostridium difficile-associated disease. Prior treatment involved transcatheter embolotherapy of the ovarian veins. Implanon was able to decrease the symptoms of chronic pelvic pain due to pelvic congestion syndrome in the experimental group. In addition, Implanon decreased venous congestion as seen by improved venography evaluations after completion of the study, It is believed that venous stasis as a result of tortuous and dilated veins in the pelvis is the underlying pathophysiology of pelvic congestion syndrome. Implanon’s side effects were reported to be much more tolerable than other hormonal therapy treatments, and a safe alternative for women who desire non-invasive treatment.Item A Combination Antioxidant Therapy in the Treatment and Prevention of Age Related Hearing Loss(2015-07) Heman-Ackah, SelenaPresbycusis, or age-related hearing loss, is one of the most common conditions impacting the aging population, characterized by progressive sensorineural hearing loss and impairment in speech discrimination capability. Current management is limited to auditory rehabilitation with the assistance of hearing aids or cochlear implants in advanced cases. There currently exists no effective treatments available for the prevention or attenuation of hearing loss in association with presbycusis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential of a combination antioxidant therapy in the prevention and treatment of presbycusis. The objectives of this randomized controlled animal study were to: identify an anesthetic which would allow for repeated reliable longitudinal auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing in a mouse model, identify a combination antioxidant which targets multiple sites within the oxidative pathway and assess its ability to prevent age-related threshold shifts and to arrest further age-related threshold shifts in C57BL6 mice with documented age-related threshold shifts. Mice were randomized to one of three groups: an early treatment group, a late treatment group, or a control group. The treatment groups of mice were fed with a combination agent comprised 6 antioxidant agents. ABRs were performed comparing Avertin to ketamine/xylazine with no significant difference in test thresholds. ABR thresholds were recorded at baseline and every 3 months following initiation of treatment in the 3 randomized groups. Threshold shifts from baseline were decreased in the treatment groups when compared to the control group at all tested frequencies and time points.Presbycusis, or age-related hearing loss, is one of the most common conditions impacting the aging population, characterized by progressive sensorineural hearing loss and impairment in speech discrimination capability. Three fourths of warts will disappear within two years, but most people want to get rid of them as soon as possible because warts are socially unacceptable. Two common ways to get rid of a wart are by freezing it off (cryotherapy) or using a weak liquid acid brushed on the top. Each treatment method has its pros and cons, but there is no scientific proof that either way of getting rid of a wart is better than other. Since neither way is better than the other, patients are able to pick which one they would prefer without getting a less effective treatment.Item Complete Data for: Laboratory evaluation of copper-based algaecides for control of the invasive macroalga starry stonewort (Nitellopsis obtusa)(2022-05-23) Glisson, Wesley J; Contreras-Rangel, Rafael; Bishop, West M; Larkin, Daniel J; wjglisson@gmail.com; Glisson, Wesley J; Minnesota Aquatic Invasive Species Research CenterNitellopsis obtusa ([Desvaux] J. Groves [1919]; Characeae), known as starry stonewort, is an invasive macroalga in Laurentian Great Lakes states and provinces in North America. Because of its potential negative impacts on native ecosystems and recreation, N. obtusa has become a high-priority target for management. However, there is a critical lack of foundational information on the efficacy of different algaecides, and concentrations thereof, for N. obtusa control. Additionally, control of N. obtusa bulbils—asexual reproductive structures that are the main pathway for the establishment of new plants—has proven difficult. We tested the efficacy of six commonly used copper-based algaecides, at a series of copper concentrations up to the maximum labeled rate, on N. obtusa thalli (photosynthetic aboveground tissues) and bulbils in controlled laboratory experiments. Bulbils were placed above and below sediment in separate experiments to evaluate whether sediment acted as a barrier to treatment. The data from these experiments are provided and documented here.Item Conjunctivitis(2009-05-01) Frodl, BrettUsing antibiotics for treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis does not improve symptoms, but it may lead to decreased spread of the infection. What can you do?(2009-05-04) Kushnaryov, AntonOsteoarthritis or Degenerative Joint Disease is a common problem affecting many people. Although there is no cure, many treatment options are available to help treat the pain and disability associated with this condition. These include exercise, weight loss, topical and oral pain medications, joint injections and surgery. Glucosamine sulfate is an over-the-counter remedy that scientific research has conflicting conclusions regarding. Presently, it is unclear whether or not glucosamine sulfate can help the symptoms of osteoarthritis.Item Perception and Practice of Inclusion of Exercise and Exercise-Related Nutrition in Eating Disorder Treatment(2022-05) Gelhaus, AshleyObjective: The purpose of this study was to gain information regarding the utilization of exercise and exercise-related nutrition in current eating disorder treatment as well as gain insight into perceived effectiveness of including it in current or future practice from the viewpoint of both providers of eating disorder treatment as well as those with active eating disorders. Additionally, we hoped to gain an overall understanding of how providers and patients define exercise and how it is practiced within their own lives. Methods: This study was a descriptive research study and mostly exploratory in nature. This study included two study groups: patients with eating disorders and providers treating people who have eating disorders. Data was collected using two separate anonymous surveys via online portals. Results: Patients reported the inclusion of exercise in eating disorder treatment, while providers had more variance on whether they support or include exercise in eating disorder treatment. There was no consensus on the inclusion of exercise in treatment. Patients reported that they did not feel confident in their ability to provide adequate nutrition for exercise as well as providers stated that they believe inclusion of exercise-related nutrition benefits treatment but that it is not adequately talked about in treatment. Conclusion: There was no overall consensus on inclusion of exercise in treatment nor for approach taken in treatment. In regard to exercise-related nutrition there was more consensus that it would in fact be beneficial for treatment, however, it is not adequately covered in eating disorder treatment currently.Item Polycystic Ovary Syndrome(2008-09-02) Dunlavey, MeganDescribes symptoms, future risks associated with syndrome and treatment at a 6th grade reading level.Item Postpartum Depression(2010-07-29) Cole, NancyPostpartum depression is a very common ailment in women following childbirth. It is a frequently encountered clinical scenario. Often the clinician is faced with the decision of treatment vs. no treatment. A recent review of the evidence produced guidelines on management of this condition. Essentially there is insufficient evidence to support treatment in most cases; however these guidelines recommend treatment if the hypothyroid patient is symptomatic or if TSH is over 10.Item Traumatic brain injury: treatments(2010-07-22) Franc, DanielTraumatic brain injury is a common episode, and prompt diagnosis is important for optimal treatment.
