Item Building Together: Integrating Community Insights from North Minneapolis into West Broadway Development(2024-05-01) Mussa, Ahlam; Caples, Edward; Eckstrom, Carly; Polk, SpencerJustice Built Communities (JBC), an equitable economic development arm of Pillsbury United Communities (PUC), owns a handful of vacant lots and disused properties in North Minneapolis. PUC envisions a development process that heavily involves the community. As JBC is still in its infancy, PUC is looking to gather information from residents and business owners on how to best develop the acquired properties. The Humphrey team laid the foundation for future engagement. This included conducting interviews with previous organizations who engaged in the area, community engagement work, and focus groups. Additionally, a content analysis of engagement documentation associated with North Minneapolis was synthesized and gaps identified. The culmination of this work resulted in recommendations to PUC to equitably engage the community with purpose and meaning. These recommendations will be further leverage to create a space that will lead to prosperity for its residents.Item Impact of nutrition information on consumers' food purchases.(2011-08) Shiratori, SakikoThis study estimates the impact of nutrition information provided by popular media on consumers' food purchases in U.S. grocery stores, taking omega-3 fortified eggs as an example. Household-level scanner data are analyzed with the media index for the information about health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids, which is constructed from multiple information sources by utilizing computer-coded content analysis. In addition, the welfare change of consumers is measured by the consumer surplus and the value of information is also estimated. The results show a significant positive impact of nutritional information from popular media on consumers' food choices. Consumers are quite sensitive to the prices of regular eggs, but are not very sensitive to a change in the price of omega-3 eggs. Consumer surplus increased over time. When this welfare change is investigated further using the concept of the value of information, most of the welfare change is accounted for by the information. In this way, publishing in popular media can be an effective information communication approach to promote consumers' health.Item Leveraging Informatics To Understand Online Communication Patterns Between Migraine Sufferers On Social Media(2021-03) Gomaa, BasmaSocial Network Sites (SNS) have been widely used by patients to exchange emotional support and health information in several health conditions. However, migraine patients’ use of social media is under- investigated. In this study, we investigated migraine patients’ behavior on two social media platforms by applying “Content” and “Social Network Analysis” techniques. The study aimed to compare the connectivity by describing the network structure, tie characteristics, in addition to identifying conversational themes. The migraine network on Twitter is more connected than the Facebook network, indicating more information and emotional support exchanged on Twitter. The informational theme dominated over the emotional theme on both platforms. However, the quality of information exchanged on Facebook was better than on Twitter which contained misinformation, spam and advertisements. The study highlights the vital role of moderators and sheds light on the technical features unique to each platform and impact on the users’ engagement patterns. The study provides guidance to intervention designers, online community managers and public health officials regarding the appropriate platform with specific technical features that will address the unique needs for migraine patients. More studies are needed, however, about the connection between technology, patients and disease conditions.Item Online News Coverage of COVID-19 in Politically-Diverse Areas: Content Analysis of Articles from the Minnesota Star Tribune and South Carolina’s Post and Courier(2024-11-20) Fauglid, Ryan; LoRusso, SusanItem Pragmatic Approaches to Learning Objectives: A Survey of Writing Instructors(2017-04-25) Bollig, Nathan WThis exploratory project seeks to understand the practical ways that teachers incorporate instructional documents and frameworks, like learning objectives, into their pedagogies and classroom practices. Specifically, this researcher conducts a survey that asks: How do instructors approach learning objectives in praxis?Item Towards Reliable User Collaboration over Cloud-based File Synchronization System:Dropbox as a Case Study(2016-07) Bommana, Bharath KumarRecent advances in cloud technology have turned the idea of Cloud Storage into a reality. Over the past few years, cloud-based file storage/synchronization systems such as Dropbox, Google Drive and One Drive, have gained tremendous success among Internet users. The cloud storage systems, most notably Dropbox, not only provide reliable file storage but also enable effective file synchronization with diverse user collaborations. It is thus interesting to explore if this cloud-based file storage system can provide reliable collaboration service for the users. In this thesis, we, for the first time, collect samples of content shared on Dropbox and analyze it. We then take our first step to understand the reliable user collaboration over cloud-based file storage systems using the popular Dropbox as a case study. Our observations indicate that users' updates would be discarded without any warning in a classic collaborative file editing session on Dropbox like file storage systems. In particular, to ensure a reliable service, the users need to wait for over 40 seconds between two updates when their uploading capacity is lower than 100 KBytes/sec. This already exceeds the auto-saving interval of many real world applications and severely hinders the system applicability. We further investigate the root causes of this phenomenon and find that such a problem is due to the three-layer design(i.e. user client, cloud virtual machines and cloud storage) of cloud storage systems. To address this problem of losing updates in multi-user collaborative file editing session, we propose an enhancement to the system that keeps track of and saves all the user updates locally and provides the opportunity for the recovery of any historical updates. Our proposed enhancement ensures that none of the user updates will be lost during a file editing session irrespective of the time interval between the updates and thereby making Dropbox user collaboration more resilient and less prone to potential data loss.
