The study undertook to devise practical modifications of present methods of logging which will hasten the production of a second crop on cut-over lands.Item Report on Lumbering in Minnesota, Operations In and Around Cloquet, 1911(1911-01) Hamilton, C L; Oppel, A FThe report includes a number of observations that illustrate lumbering operations typical of the Cloquet region with an emphasis on activities of the Cloquet Lumber Company in southern Saint Louis County. The report includes some photographic prints and a lumber mill blueprint.Item Program of Investigative Work to be Carried On at the Cloquet Forest Experiment Station(1912-05-30) Zon, RaphaelThe purpose of the Cloquet Forest Experiment Station in 1912 was to assist in the practical solution of forest problems that arose in the management of pine lands, to educate students and professionals in the proper methods of forest management and reforestation, and to advance the science of forestry as a whole. The program of work outlined in this document describes primary research efforts for the Cloquet Forest Experiment Station and describes in detail the materials, equipment, and personnel needed to carry out the proposed work in its first years of operation. These operations were to be carried out with cooperation between the University of Minnesota and the United States Forest Service.Item History of the Cloquet Forest Experiment Station(1917) Kenety, W HA draft forest management report thought to have been completed in the winter of 1916-17 by W.H. Kenety, Superintendent of the Cloquet Forest Experiment Station with support from G. H. Wiggin, Assistant Forester at Cloquet. The report details station operations beginning in 1910 with detailed information on nursery work and early reforestation efforts. Other subject matter includes land acquisition history, existing infrastructure, staffing, land types, vegetation types, methods for tree seed collection, arboretum plantings, experimental tree plantings, meteorological observations, and soil conditions. Photograph prints are included to illustrate forest conditions, early nursery operations, station improvements, and research projects. An abbreviated version of this 354 page report was published October 1917 by the University of Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station titled: "Report of the Cloquet Forest Experiment Station". A digitized version of the published 1917 report can be found online through Google Books.Item Work of the Cloquet Forest Experiment Station(1924) Schantz-Hansen, ThorvaldA short description of the purpose and activities of the Cloquet Forest Experiment Station with particular emphasis on the forester's mindset of tending trees as a crop.Item Annual Report of the Cloquet Forest Experiment Station, 1924(1925) Schantz-Hansen, ThorvaldA progress report for the Cloquet Forest Experiment Station describing operations at the Cloquet Forest including funding, expenditures, and administrative activities from 1922 through 1924. The report contains valuable details related to tree nursery operations and research projects led by University faculty associated with the Station.Item The Research Activities of the Cloquet Forest Experiment Station(1928) Allison, John HThis brief report of the research work carried out by the University of Minnesota Cloquet Forest Experiment Station was prepared to summarize the projects carried out by the Division of Forestry for the public and researchers across the country. The report includes 1.) a description of the experiment station, 2.) a description of active projects, and 3.) a list of publications from 1925 to 1928.Item Management Plan for the Cloquet Forest(1931)A historical management plan and report for the Cloquet Forest, also known as the Cloquet Forest Experiment Station, and now called the University of Minnesota Cloquet Forestry Center (CFC). The purpose of the Cloquet Forest in its early years was to 1.) provide a demonstration area where the feasibility of intensive forestry could be shown, 2.) to provide an area where various experiments in forestry practice could be carried out, and 3.) provide a place of recreation for people of the community through which correct information on forestry may be disseminated. The management plan provides site-specific information on these efforts. The date of internal publication is circa 1931.Item Report on the Cloquet Forest Experiment Station circa 1936(1936)A report of recent work at the Cloquet Forest Experiment Station provided circa 1936 with particular emphasis on the activities of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) over the prior three years. The final page of the report includes a color map showing areas of CCC activity including fire breaks (red), cultural treatment including thinning, cleaning, release, improvement, accretion (yellow), and tree planting (green).Item Ruffed Grouse on the Cloquet Experimental Forest(St. Paul, Minn. : School of Forestry, University of Minnesota, 1953-08-15) Marshall, W.H.; Winsness, K.E.Item Jack pine stem rusts(1959) Anderson, N.A.Item 50 Years at the Cloquet Forest Research Center(1960) Schantz-Hansen, ThorvaldThis is the story of the first fifty years (1909-1959) of the Cloquet Forest Research Center (now the Cloquet Forestry Center), as recorded by T. Schantz-Hansen circa 1960 in 31 typed pages. It summarizes the events and personnel involved with establishing the Center, early research and management activities on the forest, the nursery program, and personnel involved over the years, including lists of superintendents, foremen, student workers. The narrative includes many mentions of forest fire, the causes of fire, which was most often railroads, berry pickers, or picnickers, and the work that was done to create fire-lines for suppression and prevention efforts. The October 12, 1918 Cloquet fire is specifically mentioned as having not impacted the lands. It also summarizes the work conducted at the Center by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The origins of this document and if it was ever published are not totally clear. Even so, it provides the most succinct narrative of the history of the first 50 years. The author started work at the Center in 1919 and served as the lead administrator from 1923-1960. Two paper copies of this text have existed in the Forest Manager's file cabinets over the years. This is intended to be a digital archive of the paper copy that is thought to be the most complete version. It was scanned on July 17, 2020.Item A New Disease of Conifer Seedlings in the Lake States(1962) Anderson, N. A; French, D. W.; Bugbee, W.Item Nutrient sediment production from forested watersheds in northeastern Minnesota(1980) Brooks, Kenneth N.Item Assessment of the growth and yield potential of the Cloquet Forest with a computer-based growth projection model(University of Minnesota, 1980-12-01) Moeur, Melinda; Ek, Alan R.; Rose, DietmarA comprehensive data base consisting of permanent plot information from four survey years (1959 to 1976) was compiled for the Cloquet Forestry Center. Corresponding covertype data was developed and covertype maps were drafted. A distance-independent individual-tree-based growth model (MFPS) was used to project growth and yield for covertypes, with and without management. Management projections involved harvest by clearcut and subsequent regeneraton. Covertype summary table of initial inventories and projection results were produced by SUMREP, a computer program containing whole-tree biomass and product volume functions. Potential income from predicted first decade harvest of the red pine covertype is presented.Item Cloquet Forestry Center permanent plot records 1959-1976 : status report and plans for remeasurement.(University of Minnesota, 1982-07-01) Reber, Carol A.; Ek, Alan R.The Cloquet Forestry Center continuous forest inventory is one of the most extensive data sets of its kind in the Lake States. Numerous studies ranging from reproduction sampling analyses to the testing of growth projection models have been based on this data. This report describes the sampling design, observed variables and past analyses of the survey plus data management problems that affect its utility. Summary statistics are also presented for various cover type aggregates for past measurement dates. A discussion of forest development over time is followed with plans for the 1982 remeasurement.Item Economic analysis in planning the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources tree improvement program.(1983) Ford, Douglas; Merrill, Robert E.; Mohn, Carl A.; Stine, Robert A.Item Survival and growth of tamarack seed sources in ten NC-99 tests(1985) Mohn, C.A.; Hanover, J.
