Item Analyzing Demographics: Assessing Library Use Across the Institution(2013-01-24) Nackerud, Shane; Fransen, Jan; Peterson, Kate; Mastel, KristenIn Fall 2011, staff at the University of Minnesota Libraries-Twin Cities undertook a project to measure how often, and in what ways, students used the Libraries' services. Partnering with the University's Office of Institutional Research, the team investigated ways to match library service usage to individual accounts while retaining patron privacy to determine who was – and was not – using the library. With complete data sets, the group was able to determine overall usage rates for undergraduate and graduate students and compare how students in different colleges used library services. This article discusses data gathering techniques, analysis, and initial findings.Item Course Integration Exploratory Subgroup: Final Report and Recommendations to the Web Services Steering Committee(2009-06-05) University Libraries, Web Services Steering Committee Course Integration Exploratory Subgroup; Carrillo, Elena; Crowe, Stephanie; Fine, Elizabeth; Jeffryes, Jon; Lilyard, Caroline; Peterson, KateThe Course Integration Exploratory Subgroup of the Web Services Steering Committee (WSSC) was charged with examining the educational technology used in courses at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities campus (UMN-TC) and exploring possibilities and making recommendations for the integration of library tools, resources, learning objects and e-learning modules into these course technologies.Item Episode 126: Walter Library Turns 100(2023-10-01) Peterson, Kate; Sirovy, Kaylie; Clark, Rachael; McMillin, LacieUMN libraries celebrates the 100 year anniversary of Walter Library.Item From “Apples to Apples” to “Topics to Keywords”: An Information Literacy Party Game(2014) Farrell, Shannon; Neeser, Amy; Peterson, Kate; Veile, JennyMany universities support video game scholarship, and in turn, academic libraries have developed gaming services to support student interests, scholarship, and teaching. Research suggests that students struggle most with developing topics and that game-based learning is an opportunity to increase student engagement. The University of Minnesota Libraries Gaming Community of Practice is developing an information literacy party card game to align with information literacy competency standards. The game will be used in undergraduate-level courses with the goal of helping students develop paper topics and related search terms. We will play this game as a demonstration while explaining the rules.Item Library Programming for a Summer Institute for New Graduate Students from Underrepresented Groups(2022-05-25) Vetruba, Brian; Peterson, KateThis talk will discuss the University of Minnesota Libraries' programming for the University of Minnesota Graduate School Diversity Office's Summer Institute (SI) which began in 2018 as a seven-week summer bridge program for newly admitted graduate students who are primarily students of color or are from other underrepresented groups. During the SI, participants attend seminars focusing on how to successfully acclimate to graduate school, receive an overview of various university services, as well as meet with peer mentors who are former SI participants. Working closely with a faculty mentor, each participant engages in a new research project culminating in a presentation at the end of the seven weeks. The goal of the research is not to complete an entire research project, but rather gain experience conducting research and writing that they will do in their graduate programs. In this talk, Kate Peterson and Brian Vetruba, the two librarians who organized and coordinated the Libraries' efforts in the SI, will provide an overview on how the Libraries' participation has evolved. They'll also share feedback from participants, the Graduate School, and librarians involved as well as thoughts on moving forward. Finally, they'll offer tips for other librarians who wish to do something similar at their own institutions.Item One Step at a Time: Encouraging Early Undergraduates to Begin Their Research Journeys(Association of College and Research Libraries, 2023) Nelsen, Katherine; Bakker, Caitlin; Kempf, Jody; Lafferty, Meghan; Langham-Putrow, Allison; Peterson, KateThe University of Minnesota Libraries developed a series of workshops to prepare students with the information and skills needed to pursue an undergraduate research project. Using Clifton’s StrengthsFinder®, this initiative is designed to support the undergraduate experience and Student Learning Outcomes. Amy Riegelman and Kate Peterson, librarians at the University of Minnesota, and both members of the Teaching and Learning Coordinators, met with the leadership of the Strengths U Initiative to learn more about the program and eventually connected the 34 unique Strengths with library research suggestions. The information is now displayed on a library web page, and cards with each unique strength and mapped library research tips were disseminated at an orientation event. The content on the poster includes sample Strengths with coordinating research suggestions written by Riegelman and Peterson. Also, Riegelman and Peterson explain why this approach is effective; research on metacognition that has shown that having an awareness of your strengths before you begin a task or project may help you to learn more effectively.Item Topics to Keywords Library Information Literacy Party Game: Card Templates, Example Cards, and Suggested Rules(2014) Farrell, Shannon; Neeser, Amy; Peterson, Kate; Veile, Jenny
