Abstract

A 2-hour national satellite video program that was produced by the University of Minnesota Extension and University of Wisconsin Extension. This educational program includes several on-site videos from native locations in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Expect horticulturists are shown with native plants in several locations including the Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden, Minneapolis, MN and the Curtis Prairie at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Call in questions from the live program are included as well as a packet of educational information with plant lists and recommendations for growing native plants in the Eastern deciduous woodland, prairie, wetland or lakeshore areas, and in traditional garden settings.

Description

Historic documentation of not only the sites visited, but for the recommendations and methods for growing native plants in 1996. This is one of the first programs to discuss how to use native plants in home landscapes. The two-hour program is split here into four segments: Segment 1 is 32:11 minutes, and includes the program introduction and Eastern Deciduous Woodlands, with expert Mary Lerman at the Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden. Segment 2 is 41:17 minutes and covers Prairie Establishment and Maintenance, with experts Ron Bowen, Evelyn Howell, and Virginia Kline. Segment 3 is 15:17 minutes and covers Managing Wetlands with U of M professor Sue Galatowitsch. Segment 4 is 31:42 minutes and covers the topic of traditional gardens and native plants at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum with horticulturist Mike Heger, owner of Ambergate Gardens, along with the conclusion of the program.
