Abstract

This symposium is a component of the John E. Sawyer Seminar “Making the Mississippi: Formulating New Water Narratives for the 21st Century and Beyond” organized by the Institute for Advanced Study and River Life at the University of Minnesota. The John E. Sawyer Seminars on the Comparative Study of Cultures are funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in honor of the third president of the foundation. This year-long seminar series has been planned and coordinated in collaboration with several on- and off-campus organizations including the Minnesota Historical Society, National Park Service, and Institute on the Environment at the University of Minnesota.
