Abstract

In my 4,300-word review essay "Hamid Yeganeh's 2021 Article 'Orality, Literacy, and the "Great Divide" in Cultural Values,'" I discuss Yeganeh's article in the International Journal of Sociology and Social Policy, Ong's thought about orality and literacy and related themes, and certain related themes in Michel Foucault's thought in the 1980s and earlier. I show from Foucault's statements that he was focused on Western literate culture, whereas both Ong and Yeganeh are also focused on pre-literate oral culture and residually oral culture.
