Abstract
This
thesis,
written
in
Italian,
explores
the
life
of
one
female
poet
during
the
Italian
Unification
period,
Laura
Beatrice
Oliva-‐Mancini.
Her
role
within
the
upper
middle-‐class
society
of
nineteenth
century
Italy
becomes
apparent
through
the
investigation
of
her
familial
relationships
with
her
father,
husband
and
children.
The
author
examines
her
role
within
the
nineteenth
century
salon
culture
through
select
poetic
works
and
the
later-‐published
diary
of
Laura’s
daughter,
Grazia.
Laura’s
perception
of
the
ideals
of
the
time
also
become
apparent
in
a
close
reading
of
her
tragic
work
Ines
which
portrays
the
last
days
of
the
Castilian
noblewoman
Ines
de
Castro.
All
these
topics
combine
to
depict
Laura’s
life
within
the
context
of
nineteenth
century
Italy.
