Abstract

Both the public and civil servants want government to spend resources on policies that work. In new research Chengxin Xu, Patrick Carter, Yuan (Daniel) Cheng, Weston Merrick and Shuping Wang find that US state-level policymakers are more likely to support and fund programs that have proven outcomes. Decision-makers, they write, were more likely to prioritize programs with proven positive impacts over those that only reported outputs.
