Abstract

The data generated is levels of several target contaminants in freshwater and marine systems. The data is associated with a PLOS article that discusses the importance the natural or anthropogenic sources of these pollutants.

Description

Environmental samples - surface water and sediment and sediment cores - were collected from San Francisco Bay and Point Reyes National Seashore during the period of 2011- 2013 and were analyzed for hydroxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers (OH-BDEs), triclosan, and brominated and chlorinated dioxins (PXDDs). The target chemicals were extracted from the sediment and water samples using accelerated solvent extraction and solid phase extraction, respectively, and levels were determined using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). OH-BDEs and triclosan were extracted from the samples at the University of Minnesota Department of Civil, Environmental and Geo- Engineering, sediments cores were dated at the St. Croix Watershed Research Station, and dioxin analysis was performed on the surface sediments by Pace Analytical. The data consists of three excel files including the following tabs: 1) description of sampling locations, 2) concentrations of target pollutants as a function of location, core depth, and time, 3) calibration curves from the LC-MS/MS analysis for OH-BDEs and triclosan, and 4) linear regression statistical analysis.
