Abstract

Description

This record contains the materials needed to complete the speech science exercise described in Benjamin Munson's article "Taking up the Mantle: How Speech Scientists Can Fight Linguistic Discrimination". It contains four sections: assignment instructions, assignment materials, audio files, and a sample syllabus. Assignment instructions are given in two videos (Part 1 and Part 2) narrated by Benjamin Munson. Videos include description and narration of the study's methods. Caption files for each video can additionally be toggled on/off while viewing or downloaded on their own. Videos may additionally be available on YouTube (Part 1: https://youtu.be/sWDAQGKUJVY; Part 2: https://youtu.be/ZFAIAfIXnI0). All assignment materials are in a single .PDF file and include instructions for students and a grading rubric. The audio files are available in two formats: as a .zip container file and in a PRAAT .Collection file; for information on using PRAAT see www.praat.org. These audio files are a subset of the files available in the Palette of Voices. Further information about them can be found at https://doi.org/10.13020/0fas-n510. The .pdf sample syllabus consists of the course syllabus for the Speech Science course in which this assignment was first used (also referred to in a different section of the article).
