Abstract

The Northern Minnesota Council for Medical Education represents a group of physicians, educators and civic leaders dedicated to seeking ways and means to improve the supply and delivery of health care to the citizens of Minnesota. Organized by a small group of Duluth physicians in 1966, the Council was expanded in 1967 to include representatives from various communities in northern Minnesota. Since its inception, the Council has worked closely with representatives of the University of Minnesota School of Medicine and the University of Minnesota administrators. Dean Robert B. Howard and President O. Meredith WiIson were the first in the University to know of the Council's activity in Duluth. This Council has been guided by two basic tenets: that we shall support the Regents' Plan to expand the Health Science Program in Minneapolis; and that, if the Minnesota Legislature should decide to establish a second medical school in this state, the best site for that medical school would be the campus of the University of Minnesota, Duluth.
