The Office of Civic Engagement at the University of Minnesota Duluth was in existence by October 2005 and continued until budget cuts eliminated it in early to mid-2014. Its mission was to "provide assistance and support to faculty, students, and staff regarding community-based learning opportunities that enhance UMD’s co-curricular and/or curricular initiatives."
A predecessor, the Darland Connection (previously known as the Darland Intergenerational Program and the Darland Center) was established in the fall of 1990 by Dr. Robert Falk, long-time UMD faculty member, in honor of former UMD Chancellor Raymond Darland and his wife Jewell. It offered volunteer tutoring/mentoring services to children in Duluth area schools. Initially the tutors were retired UMD faculty and staff but UMD students and community volunteers soon joined as well.
