The Department of Continuing Education was previously called Continuing Education and Extension, Duluth Center (early 1970s through mid-1990s). From roughly 1996 through 2000 it was known as University College or University College Duluth, part of the University of Minnesota system-wide program with an office on the Duluth campus. In 2000 or 2001 it became the Department of Continuing Education, which it remained until it became part of UMD's Center for Economic Development (part of the Labovitz School of Business and Economics) in 2017.
