Item Caring Adults Support the Healthy Development of Youth(1998) Walker, Joyce; White, LonnieThe powerful influence of caring adults in the lives of children and young people has been a hallmark of youth-serving organizations since the early 20th century. Youth organizations depend on the talents, leadership, and dedication of their adult volunteers and staff. To guide the recruitment, training, and retention of adult volunteers and youth program staff, it is important to look at the roles and characteristics of the adults working with young people.Item Effective 4-H Volunteer Management(2010) Sandager, Nancy; Rauschenfels, Diane; Hyman, RandyThis mixed methods research study gathered data from members, parents, and adult volunteers associated with the Rock County Minnesota 4-H program. The purpose of this research was to identify characteristics of volunteers and to determine possible areas needing improvement in the management of the program's volunteers. Separate questionnaires were sent to youth and adults involved with the program. The adult results were analyzed to see if any demographic variables relate to volunteer service, and to establish themes from responses regarding motivation, training, recognition, and enrollment. The youth results were used to identify the characteristics associated with effective leaders and to compare these with the adult responses. The data gathered contributes to the body of research about volunteers, and more specifically, about 4-H volunteers. Comparing this data with county demographics offers insight into potential areas to target for volunteer recruitment.Item In the Beginning: A Review of Design Options Under Consideration and Questions Facing Zona Latina(2004) Ryan, Catherine; Vidas, MaryItem Individualism, Feminism and Social Change: A Study of Graduates of the Women's Institute for Social Change.(1990) Flagler, Susan McGrathItem Longfellow Dynamic Volunteer Map.(2004) Minneapolis Neighborhood Information SystemItem Nonprofits and Personal Computers.(Center for Urban and Regional Affairs, University of Minnesota., 1994) Murphy, Catherine McCannItem Preliminary Report of the Women's Institute for Social Change Research Project.(1989) Flagler, Susan McGrathItem Volunteer performance in urban forest survey initiatives(2017-05) Bancks, NicholasIn 2010, the University of Minnesota Forest Resources Department implemented a community engagement program that drew upon community volunteers. This program sought to help greater Minnesota communities assess and mitigate the potential damages brought upon by the arrival of the invasive emerald ash borer. Volunteers were trained to survey their local urban forest, collecting information on species, size, age, and condition of the city trees as part of the process. A growing number of environmental monitoring programs and natural resource managers have begun to utilize and incorporate volunteer- collected data as part of their comprehensive management strategies. Volunteer-driven programs can help to enhance community capacity and participation in future municipal resource management challenges while providing cost-effective alternatives for local municipalities. However, little information exists regarding the real and perceived accuracy of volunteers undertaking urban forest survey initiatives. An evaluation of nine community tree surveys and two training protocols has provided assessment of volunteer accuracy regarding tree survey data collection.
