Item 50 Years at the Cloquet Forest Research Center(1960) Schantz-Hansen, ThorvaldThis is the story of the first fifty years (1909-1959) of the Cloquet Forest Research Center (now the Cloquet Forestry Center), as recorded by T. Schantz-Hansen circa 1960 in 31 typed pages. It summarizes the events and personnel involved with establishing the Center, early research and management activities on the forest, the nursery program, and personnel involved over the years, including lists of superintendents, foremen, student workers. The narrative includes many mentions of forest fire, the causes of fire, which was most often railroads, berry pickers, or picnickers, and the work that was done to create fire-lines for suppression and prevention efforts. The October 12, 1918 Cloquet fire is specifically mentioned as having not impacted the lands. It also summarizes the work conducted at the Center by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The origins of this document and if it was ever published are not totally clear. Even so, it provides the most succinct narrative of the history of the first 50 years. The author started work at the Center in 1919 and served as the lead administrator from 1923-1960. Two paper copies of this text have existed in the Forest Manager's file cabinets over the years. This is intended to be a digital archive of the paper copy that is thought to be the most complete version. It was scanned on July 17, 2020.Item Annual Report of the Cloquet Forest Experiment Station, 1924(1925) Schantz-Hansen, ThorvaldA progress report for the Cloquet Forest Experiment Station describing operations at the Cloquet Forest including funding, expenditures, and administrative activities from 1922 through 1924. The report contains valuable details related to tree nursery operations and research projects led by University faculty associated with the Station.Item Cloquet Forestry Center automated weather station data for calendar year 2019(2020-09-23) University of Minnesota Cloquet Forestry Center; kggill@umn.edu; Gill, Kyle G; University of Minnesota Cloquet Forestry Center Forest Management and ResearchWeather station data for calendar year 2019 from the University of Minnesota Cloquet Forestry Center automated weather station as collected by a Campbell Scientific CR1000 datalogger and various sensors. The automated weather station serves as a higher resolution dataset and backup for the manually-collected daily weather observations that are recorded and submitted to the National Weather Service. It also includes data from sensors not required by the NWS. Data for this dataset are collected by each sensor every 20 seconds and aggregated and recorded at the CR1000 in five minute intervals. They were downloaded and appended to the growing dataset manually by CFC staff weekly. The Direct Weather Download Protocol by CFC staff is followed to ensure datalogger data quality control steps are in place during manual data download, transfer, and archiving.Item Experimental Forests project proposal and record form metadata(2022-01) Gill, Kyle GThe UMN Experimental Forests research coordinator uses a project tracking procedure, often called the Project Records data management system, to document and record the research, teaching, demonstration, management, and other activities that occur across the land base. The goal for tracking is to be a good steward of the land and data resources by documenting the extent to which we are manipulating, using, and observing the ecosystems. To initiate a project, potential project leaders submit a Project Proposal Form. Once a project is approved, the project is given a unique ID number and the form becomes the project's Project Record form. This metadata document describes the information/data that is recorded in each section of the proposal/record form. It is intended to both help answer questions as project leaders fill out the form and to serve as metadata for the Experimental Forests research coordination team.Item Management Plan for the Cloquet Forest(1931)A historical management plan and report for the Cloquet Forest, also known as the Cloquet Forest Experiment Station, and now called the University of Minnesota Cloquet Forestry Center (CFC). The purpose of the Cloquet Forest in its early years was to 1.) provide a demonstration area where the feasibility of intensive forestry could be shown, 2.) to provide an area where various experiments in forestry practice could be carried out, and 3.) provide a place of recreation for people of the community through which correct information on forestry may be disseminated. The management plan provides site-specific information on these efforts. The date of internal publication is circa 1931.Item Program of Investigative Work to be Carried On at the Cloquet Forest Experiment Station(1912-05-30) Zon, RaphaelThe purpose of the Cloquet Forest Experiment Station in 1912 was to assist in the practical solution of forest problems that arose in the management of pine lands, to educate students and professionals in the proper methods of forest management and reforestation, and to advance the science of forestry as a whole. The program of work outlined in this document describes primary research efforts for the Cloquet Forest Experiment Station and describes in detail the materials, equipment, and personnel needed to carry out the proposed work in its first years of operation. These operations were to be carried out with cooperation between the University of Minnesota and the United States Forest Service.Item Report on the Cloquet Forest Experiment Station circa 1936(1936)A report of recent work at the Cloquet Forest Experiment Station provided circa 1936 with particular emphasis on the activities of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) over the prior three years. The final page of the report includes a color map showing areas of CCC activity including fire breaks (red), cultural treatment including thinning, cleaning, release, improvement, accretion (yellow), and tree planting (green).Item The Research Activities of the Cloquet Forest Experiment Station(1928) Allison, John HThis brief report of the research work carried out by the University of Minnesota Cloquet Forest Experiment Station was prepared to summarize the projects carried out by the Division of Forestry for the public and researchers across the country. The report includes 1.) a description of the experiment station, 2.) a description of active projects, and 3.) a list of publications from 1925 to 1928.Item Wood density and decay dynamics of pentachlorophenol-treated wooden posts for four species in Minnesota, USA(2018-04-12) Russell, Matthew B; Patton, Stephanie R; Gill, Kyle G; russellm@umn.edu; Russell, Matthew BWood decay measurements collected from fence posts that were treated with a 5% oil solution of pentachlorophenol in 1942. Fence posts were installed at the University of Minnesota's Cloquet Forestry Center in Cloquet, MN.Item Work of the Cloquet Forest Experiment Station(1924) Schantz-Hansen, ThorvaldA short description of the purpose and activities of the Cloquet Forest Experiment Station with particular emphasis on the forester's mindset of tending trees as a crop.
