Item Barriers, Breakthroughs, and Backbone of Rural Elected Women(2022-05) Larmi, Naa Korkoi; Stekr, Delaney; Walker, CaitlynWomen are underrepresented in elected positions across all levels of government, especially in rural Minnesota. 100 Rural Women is a nonprofit organization focused on facilitating leadership opportunities for rural women. Its mission is important because rural women not only experience a lack of parity, but they also deal with less access to services, infrastructure and paid employment opportunities (Pozarny, 2016). In order to assist 100 Rural Women in their focus, we facilitated 19 interviews with rural women in elected office across the state in order to understand the motivators, barriers, and supports needed to assist rural women in their pathways to elected office. We found many women face barriers such as sexism, not knowing the basics of how to run a campaign, and difficulty balancing their various responsibilities. The interviewees reported that the most meaningful supports were informal, such as their friends, family, and other elected officials that provided mentorship and insight throughout their campaign and time in office. Through our interviews, we found that all interviewees are interested in participating in a mentorship network to support other elected women and to encourage more women to run for office. These findings suggest that a support network based on providing meaningful connection, as well as training on the barriers encountered would be an important tool for getting more rural women into leadership positions.Item CapitolRiver District Council: Wayfinding Program Evaluation Plan(Resilient Communities Project (RCP), University of Minnesota, 2020) Friedman, Sarah; Stekr, Delaney; Cofer, Kobey; Ritten, SarahThis project was completed as part of a partnership between CapitolRiver District Council and the University of Minnesota’s Resilient Communities Project (http://www.rcp.umn.edu). The goal of this project was to identify how wayfinding in Downtown Saint Paul can be enhanced to contribute to vibrant and connected communities, activated streetscapes, and economic resilience. CapitolRiver District Council project lead Jon Fure collaborated with students in Professor Emily Kalnicky’s course, PA 5311: Program Evaluation, to create an evaluation plan that assesses how City of St. Paul zoning codes and ordinances impact the current wayfinding system, and identifies legislative opportunities CRC could advocate for to improve wayfinding. A final student report and presentation are available. A videorecording of the students' final presentation is also available at https://vimeo.com/493483306.Item A Qualitative Study of Washington County Parks: Senior Usage(Resilient Communities Project (RCP), University of Minnesota, 2022) Lee, Alexander; Stekr, Delaney; Surosh, Mahdi; Huber, OliviaThis project was completed as part of a partnership between Washington County and the University of Minnesota’s Resilient Communities Project (https://rcp.umn.edu/). The goal of this qualitative research project was to find ways to reduce barriers and increase park participation among seniors, who are underrepresented parks users. Washington County project lead Connor Schaefer collaborated with a team of students in Dr. Greta Friedemann-Sánchez's course PA 5041 to conduct in-depth, semi-structured interviews with senior residents of Washington County about their park usage. A final student report and PowerPoint presentation slides from the project are available.
