Assessing Millennial Brand Equity for the Minnesota Historical Society
(University of Minnesota Tourism Center, 2015-06-30) Linnemanstons, Katherine; Schneider, Ingrid; Gartner, William
The University of Minnesota Tourism Center worked with the Minnesota Historical Society (MNHS) to investigate its brand equity with millennials (defined as those born between 1980 and 1993). Specifically, the Tourism Center assessed customer-based brand equity with regards to four dimensions: Awareness, Image, Quality and Loyalty. Results from this research will allow promotions and marketing staff to align perceived brand identity with intended brand identity among millennials. Similarly, development professionals can use the information to better understand how to connect with millennials.

The Benefits and Difficulties of Adopting Sustainable Practices Among the Minnesota Tourism Industry
(University of Minnesota Extension, 2014-10) Qian, Xinyi; Schneider, Ingrid; Simmons, Pat
"There was little research on the perceived benefits and difficulties to adopt sustainable practices among U.S. tourism entities, and no known research so far has tracked the evolution of such attitudes over time. Filling these two knowledge gaps will increase the effectiveness of educational and assistance programs that help tourism entities adopt sustainable practices. To do so, the Tourism Center partnered with Explore Minnesota Tourism (EMT), the state‘s tourism promotion agency, to monitor the attitudes towards and implementation of sustainable practices among Minnesota tourism entities. An online questionnaire was developed and distributed to a database of Minnesota tourism entities maintained by EMT, first in 2007 (n=451), then again in 2010 (n=581) and 2013 (n=426). Data were analyzed using SPSS. From 2010 to 2013, respondents were much more likely to perceive increased environmental protection as a benefit, which is encouraging, as it may cultivate an intrinsic motivation conducive to actually implement sustainable practices. Meanwhile, respondents were significantly less likely to perceive improved organizational image as a benefit in 2010 than in 2007, which may reflect society‘s increasing expectation of sustainable practices as an integral part of business. From 2007 to 2013, respondents were much less likely to perceive lack of information and lack of interest within the consumer base as difficulties. The former finding indicates at least some information on sustainable tourism practices has been diffused, and the latter indicates tourism businesses‘ recognition of consumer interests. Suggested future research includes assessing attitudes toward specific practices, continual tracking, and cross-state/country comparisons."

Integrated emerald ash borer management: Testing a novel approach to assess stakeholder perceptions
(2023-01-23) Schneider, Ingrid; Rannow, Brett; Russell, Matt; Gupta, Angela; Windmuller-Campione, Marcella; ingridss@umn.edu; Schneider, Ingrid
These data describe Minnesota state park visitors' perceptions, attitudes, preferences, and behaviors pertaining to landscapes managed in response to emerald ash borer (EAB, Agrilus planipennis) and EAB itself. Two primary datasets are included: 1) Onsite data captured from visitors at Fort Snelling, Lake Bemidji, and Wild River state parks and 2) Data obtained from online surveys. These data aim to inform researchers and managers of the public's understanding of EAB, their acceptance of common Minnesota forest management strategies, their intended visitation behaviors in response to management surrounding EAB, and preferences for landscapes managed in response to EAB. Coding manuals, data descriptions, and participant consent forms are included. Data were released to provide transparency and data to potential stakeholders and interested parties.

A Summary of Select Trends among Minnesota Tourism Perceptions and Spending
(University of Minnesota Tourism Center, 2015) Schneider, Ingrid; Schlueter, Alex
Minnesota residents consistently reported tourism as an important part of Minnesota’s economy, while spending and intended spending varied slightly across survey periods. In terms of perceptions regarding tourism, more than nine out of 10 Minnesota residents reported tourism as important to the state’s economy during 2005-2009. Between 2011 and 2014, leisure travel spending habits fluctuated. They dipped in 2011 but increased and have remained stable since then. Following a similar pattern, intended spending on leisure travel in the next 12 months dipped in 2012, but has increased since that time.
