Item Analyzing Demographics: Assessing Library Use Across the Institution(2013-01-24) Nackerud, Shane; Fransen, Jan; Peterson, Kate; Mastel, KristenIn Fall 2011, staff at the University of Minnesota Libraries-Twin Cities undertook a project to measure how often, and in what ways, students used the Libraries' services. Partnering with the University's Office of Institutional Research, the team investigated ways to match library service usage to individual accounts while retaining patron privacy to determine who was – and was not – using the library. With complete data sets, the group was able to determine overall usage rates for undergraduate and graduate students and compare how students in different colleges used library services. This article discusses data gathering techniques, analysis, and initial findings.Item Beyond Butts in Seats: Creating campus and community partnerships through meaningful outreach(2015) Farrell, Shannon L.; Mastel, KristenIn order to stay relevant and meet the needs of our existing and potential users, libraries are forming partnerships and engaging users in numerous ways outside of the classroom. How do we measure the impact of our outreach programming? High attendance numbers may show that we had excellent swag and food at an event, but is counting heads a meaningful assessment measure? This poster will share examples of various kinds of outreach, discuss opportunities for forging partnerships, consider the impact of different outreach activities, and examine new assessment strategies to move beyond simple head counts.Item Bridging Research to Practice: An Innovative Approach to Sharing Extension's Work(University of Minnesota Extension, 2018-10) Mastel, Kristen; Katras, Mary JoThere is increasing competition for research-informed and trusted information online. Since Wikipedia is so prominent, it is an innovative opportunity for Extension to increase the rigor of Wikipedia articles by adding our research and education citations to make our work more discoverable and accessible.Item Considering Outreach Assessment: Strategies, Sample Scenarios, and a Call to Action(In the Library with the Lead Pipe, 2016-05-04) Farrell, Shannon; Mastel, KristenHow do we measure the impact of our outreach programming? While there is a lot of information about successful outreach activities in the library literature, there is far less documentation of assessment strategies. There may be numerous barriers to conducting assessment, including a lack of time, money, staff, knowledge, and administrative support. Further, many outreach activities are not tied back to institutional missions and event goals, meaning they are disjointed activities that do not reflect particular outcomes. High attendance numbers may show that there was excellent swag and food at an event, but did the event relate back to your missions and goals? In this article, we examine the various kinds of outreach that libraries are doing, sort these activities into six broad categories, explore assorted assessment techniques, and include a small survey about people’s experience and comfort with suggested assessments. Using hypothetical outreach scenarios, we will illustrate how to identify appropriate assessment strategies to evaluate an event’s goals and measure impact. Recognizing there are numerous constraints, we suggest that all library workers engaging in outreach activities should strongly consider incorporating goals-driven assessment in their work.Item Creating Fantastic Gardening Kits(Chicago: Association of College & Research Libraries, 2020) Mastel, Kristen; Gaither, RenoirItem Curating Historical Scientific Analog Data(2023-09) Farrell, Shannon; Kelly, Julia; Hendrickson, Lois; Mastel, KristenThis in-depth case study features speakers Shannon Farrell, Julia Kelly, Lois Hendrickson, and Kristen Mastel from the University of Minnesota Libraries.
