Item Bird species included in bird censuses conducted by students and faculty and staff researchers at the University of Minnesota Itasca Biological Station and Laboratories 1940-2010 with links to the related reports(2022-03-28) Farrell, Shannon; Kelly, Julia; sfarrell@umn.edu; Farrell, Shannon; U LibrariesCompilation of types of bird species included in bird censuses conducted by students and faculty and staff researchers at the University of Minnesota Itasca Biological Station and Laboratories 1940-2010 with links to the related reports. Dataset is organized by common names of bird species (as they were listed in the papers) and additional information about scientific family names was added. Some bird species names included parentheses; this is because the currently used common name was added to the dataset rather than the one that was noted in the paper. In these cases, the currently used common name was used first and the one from the paper was placed in parentheses, e.g. Common Yellow-throat (Northern Yellow-throat).Item Considering Outreach Assessment: Strategies, Sample Scenarios, and a Call to Action(In the Library with the Lead Pipe, 2016-05-04) Farrell, Shannon; Mastel, KristenHow do we measure the impact of our outreach programming? While there is a lot of information about successful outreach activities in the library literature, there is far less documentation of assessment strategies. There may be numerous barriers to conducting assessment, including a lack of time, money, staff, knowledge, and administrative support. Further, many outreach activities are not tied back to institutional missions and event goals, meaning they are disjointed activities that do not reflect particular outcomes. High attendance numbers may show that there was excellent swag and food at an event, but did the event relate back to your missions and goals? In this article, we examine the various kinds of outreach that libraries are doing, sort these activities into six broad categories, explore assorted assessment techniques, and include a small survey about people’s experience and comfort with suggested assessments. Using hypothetical outreach scenarios, we will illustrate how to identify appropriate assessment strategies to evaluate an event’s goals and measure impact. Recognizing there are numerous constraints, we suggest that all library workers engaging in outreach activities should strongly consider incorporating goals-driven assessment in their work.Item Curating Historical Scientific Analog Data(2023-09) Farrell, Shannon; Kelly, Julia; Hendrickson, Lois; Mastel, KristenThis in-depth case study features speakers Shannon Farrell, Julia Kelly, Lois Hendrickson, and Kristen Mastel from the University of Minnesota Libraries. Building on their recent publication, the presenters will share their experiences discovering and capturing heterogeneous historic data, the various forms the data took, and suggestions for others interested in capturing historical, analog data. There are 2855 papers covered. Various characteristics were recorded including the amount of data, whether the data was numeric or descriptive, the year the work was conducted, the location of the study, the species covered, and whether maps or photographs were also present. The resulting data set presented here cites the original papers and includes information on how to obtain a copy.Item Examining Grey Literature Use, Citation, and Creation Practices of Faculty at a Large Institution(2018-12-04) Cooper, Kristen; Riegelman, Amy; Marsolek, Wanda; Farrell, Shannon; Julie, KellyItem Exploring Disciplinary Differences in Data Management Practices(2015) Bakker, Caitlin J.; Farrell, Shannon; Neeser, AmyOur poster will compare and contrast the differences in requirements and practice of data management plans in the broad disciplinary fields of life sciences and health sciences. We will discuss the similarities and differences in both the researchers’ attitudes and approaches to data management plans, the potential barriers to adoption, and practical strategies for librarians to address these potential needs and obstacles. Further, we will consider differences in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) data management requirements and how they impact researchers, including faculty members, post-docs, students, and staff. The libraries at our large, research university are in the process of collecting information about researchers’ data management needs in a variety of disciplines. Further, we are reviewing researchers’ submitted data management plans in order to examine trends and potential opportunities for service development. We are examining the broad differences both between and within disciplines, in order to better equip both researchers and library staff to develop better data management practices. To that end, we are currently developing more robust training for both researchers and library staff in order to address identified areas of need and create a culture shift where data management becomes an integrated part of researchers’ work flow.Item Faculty Experiences With Grey Literature: A Mixed Methods Approach(2018-10-11) Cooper, Kristen; Riegelman, Amy; Marsolek, Wanda; Farrell, Shannon; Kelly, JuliaAs academic librarians, we are acutely aware of the challenges in locating grey literature. In our recent mixed-methods research we surveyed and conducted interviews to investigate how tenured and tenure-track faculty at the University of Minnesota experience grey literature in terms of finding, citing, and creating. The poster will share the preliminary results of our research and will help attendees understand 1) the multiple different types of resources that are considered grey literature as well as 2) other aspects of grey literature including why it is desirable in evidence synthesis as researchers attempt to address publication bias.Item Follow the money: Getting chemists to share their data(Research Data Access & Preservation Summit, 2018-03-22) Lafferty, Meghan; Bishoff, Carolyn; Farrell, ShannonThe University of Minnesota Libraries was invited to partner with an interdisciplinary research center to strengthen their data management practices & pilot a data project at the request of NSF. Data sharing is not the norm for chemistry & materials science researchers but we had the support of advocates in the center and made practical compromises that encouraged buy-in and participation, led to well-described and decently organized data, and a workflow that we adapted to their time constraints and publishing cycle. We faced familiar obstacles to fully FAIR data: friction with researchers, complex and heterogeneous data sets, and limitations of our repository systems. Our university has an established data curation process but each data submission was highly interdisciplinary and it was the first time most of us had encountered the data formats we curated. Additional pressure came from the NSF which expected the Center to be a leader in data management. The project is a scaled effort to change the data sharing culture of a large research center using a collaboration of embedded liaison librarians and data curators. We had no budget for this project and relied on existing infrastructure and staff. This presentation will examine several decisions and compromises that frame the tension between the FAIR ideal and the limitations we had on people, systems, and data.Item From “Apples to Apples” to “Topics to Keywords”: An Information Literacy Party Game(2014) Farrell, Shannon; Neeser, Amy; Peterson, Kate; Veile, JennyMany universities support video game scholarship, and in turn, academic libraries have developed gaming services to support student interests, scholarship, and teaching. Research suggests that students struggle most with developing topics and that game-based learning is an opportunity to increase student engagement. The University of Minnesota Libraries Gaming Community of Practice is developing an information literacy party card game to align with information literacy competency standards. The game will be used in undergraduate-level courses with the goal of helping students develop paper topics and related search terms. We will play this game as a demonstration while explaining the rules.Item Participation in a large-scale study to evaluate agricultural research support services(2016-09) Kocher, Megan; Farrell, ShannonDuring the spring and summer of 2016, we participated in Ithaka S+R’s Research Support Services program, which “is designed to help libraries re-imagine their services for scholars on a discipline-by-discipline basis.” Ithaka S+R is a not-for-profit organization that partners with academic libraries to help them gather evidence, via surveys and other research methods, to improve library services and strategic planning. Ithaka S+R is currently doing a series of studies to determine researcher support needs in various disciplines, such as religious studies, chemistry, and public health. We participated in their agricultural study, which aimed to learn about agricultural researchers’ research focus, research methods and publishing practices. The data that we collected will be collated with 18 other institutions and will be published in a large report. In this poster, we will share our experiences participating in this large-scale research project, through working with Ithaka S+R, interviewing participants, coding qualitative data, and analyzing results. We will also share our preliminary findings on agriculture scholars at the University of Minnesota.Item Supplemental information for "A pilot study to locate historic scientific data in a university archive"(2023) Farrell, Shannon; Kelly, Julia A.; Hendrickson, Lois G.; Mastel, Kristen L.Item Topics to Keywords Library Information Literacy Party Game: Card Templates, Example Cards, and Suggested Rules(2014) Farrell, Shannon; Neeser, Amy; Peterson, Kate; Veile, JennyItem University of Minnesota Libraries Response to "Increasing Public Access to the Results of USDOT-Funded Transportation Research" (2023)(2023-05) University Libraries; Hofelich Mohr, Alicia; Hunt, Shanda; Farrell, Shannon; Langham-Putrow, AllisonItem University of Minnesota Libraries Response to "National Institute on Aging (NIA) Request for Information (RFI) on Data Management, Sharing, and Secondary Data Use Challenges and Opportunities" (2024)(2024-06-13) University Libraries; Hofelich Mohr, Alicia; Hunt , Shanda; Farrell, Shannon; Narlock, Mikala; Marsolek, WandaItem University of Minnesota Libraries Response to Request for Information: "NIH Developing Consent Language for Research Using Digital Health Technologies" (2023)(2023-12) University Libraries; Hofelich Mohr, Alicia; Farrell, Shannon; Hunt, ShandaItem University of Minnesota Libraries Response to Request for Information: "NIH Plan to Enhance Public Access to the Results of NIH-Supported Research" (2023)(2023-04) University Libraries; Langham-Putrow, Allison; Hofelich Mohr, Alicia; McBurney, Jenny; Webb, Pamela; Hunt, Shanda; Farrell, ShannonItem University of Minnesota Libraries Response to Request for Information: "Public Access to Peer-Reviewed Scholarly Publications, Data, and Code Resulting From Federally Funded Research" (2020)(2020-04) University Libraries; Farrell, Shannon; Langham-Putrow, Allison; Kubas, Alicia; Bakker, Caitlin; Molls, Emma; Riegelman, Amy; Leebaw, Danya; Johnston, LisaItem University of Minnesota Libraries Response to “89 FR 51537: Request for Information on the National Institutes of Health Draft Public Access Policy” (2024)(2024-08-19) University Libraries; German, Lisa; Langham-Putrow, Allison; Hofelich Mohr, Alicia; Farrell, Shannon; Hunt, Shanda; Marsolek, WandaItem University of Minnesota Libraries Response to “Notice of Second Interested Party Feedback Period Regarding Increasing Public Access to the Results of USDA-Funded Research” (2024)(2024-02) University Libraries; Langham-Putrow, Allison; Farrell, Shannon; Marsolek, Wanda; Hunt, ShandaItem University of Minnesota Libraries Response: "Request for Public Comments on DRAFT Supplemental Information to the NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing: Protecting Privacy When Sharing Human Research Participant Data” (2022)(2022-05) University Libraries; Farrell, Shannon; Hofelich Mohr, Alicia; Hunt, Shanda; McBurney, Jenny
