Early Season Weed Control and Field Scouting Tips

Abstract

June weed management was the focus of the first half of this week's episode with U of M Extension Weed Scientist Debalin Sarangi. Late planting has likely helped some weed management where clean fields are likely the result of late tillage that especially helps with some weeds, such as giant ragweed. Pre-emerge herbicides will still be important for extended control of waterhemp. Dr. Anthony Hanson, U of M Field Crops Integrated Pest Management Extension Educator, also discussed scouting for insects. Be sure to get an estimate across an entire field of how severe an infestation may be. Insects can especially be aggregated in fields where a small area may have an entirely different stand or insect count than the rest of the field.
