Description

The history of international relations reveals a striking pattern since Athens challenged Sparta in about 500BC: war often results when a new rising power challenges the long-dominant ruling power. One of America's most influential analysts of national security, Graham Allison, draws on this pattern to suggest that the surge of China on the international scene could lead to war with the United States. And yet, war is not inevitable if China and the U.S. appreciate the risks and rely on diplomacy to forestall conflict. Former Vice President Walter Mondale will join a conversation with Professor Allison. Professor Larry Jacobs will moderate. Graham Allison was Director of Harvard's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs from 1995 until July 2017. Allison is a leading analyst of U.S. national security and defense policy with a special interest in nuclear weapons, terrorism, and decision-making. His latest book, Destined for War: Can America and China Escape Thucydides’s Trap? was published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in May 2017 and quickly became a national bestseller.
