Protective supervision is one of numerous dispositions the court can order when it determines that a child is in need of protection or services. However, the specific conditions, circumstances, and practices in the uses of this option have not received concentrated attention. This study analyzes the high rate of re-entry in Minnesota's child welfare system (i.e., children removed from home, then reunified with parents, and then once again placed in the foster care system). The study evaluates when and how protective supervision could contribute to limiting out-of-home placements and re-entry in the state.
