Abstract
In this 4,300-word review essay, I summarize key points from Elaine Pagels' 2018 memoir titled Why Religion?: A Personal Story (Ecco/ HarperCollins). In addition, I relate certain points she makes to selected other authors including the American Jesuit Renaissance specialist and cultural historian Walter J. Ong (1912-2003) and the Swiss psychiatrist and psychological theorist C. G. Jung, M.D. (1875-1961). I also provide numerous references to works of related interest.
