Abstract

Description

Harrison Neighborhood Association receives monthly crime statistics from their CCP/Safe officer showing the locations of various crimes in the neighborhood. The data is not in a useful format and does not allow views of crime over time for instance. The neighborhood wanted to put the maps in an electronic format that was compatible with their GIS parcel data. Paper copies of crime statistics were added as a GIS layer by placing points on a map of the neighborhood. Attribute data was added for the month the crime occurred and the type of crime (homicide/rape, burglary, auto theft, assault). The resulting GIS layer makes it possible to display crimes in Harrison over time and by type of crime, allowing neighborhood staff to identify areas of persistent crime and focus outreach efforts.
