In the Face of Loneliness: A Multi-Case Study of Exemplary Teachers and Leaders Providing Spiritual Care in (Enspirited) Schools

Abstract
This multi-case study investigates how exemplary teachers and educational leaders practice spiritual care in the face of the loneliness epidemic among youth in the United States. Using phenomenological case study methodology, the research examines four cases across two secondary schools—one independent religious school and one public school—both in an urban context in the Midwest of the U.S. Data collection included semi-structured interviews, field observations, and subsequent anchored interviews based on narrative reflection. The study proposes a foundational framework of spiritual care defined as "compassionate presence that cultivates connections with people and helps people create meaning in their lives," along with findings emerging from this that reveal that spiritually caring educators engage in five key practices: liminality (holding, bridging, and transcending space), physicality (health, verbal and embodied ritual), reflectivity (self-reflection, inquiry, purpose), humility (self-knowledge, the quest, humor), and harmonity (integration of music and sanctity seen in music, sacrifice, and family). These practices promote spiritual well-being through connectedness to self, others, nature, and the transcendent. The research challenges sacred-secular divisions in education and suggests that spiritual care, whether explicitly named or not, is present in schools through exemplary educators who function as de facto chaplains. Implications include the potential for designing professional development programs to cultivate spiritually caring capacities among educators as a response to student disconnection and loneliness. The study contributes to educational leadership, spirituality in education, and pastoral care literature by providing empirical evidence of spiritual care practices that transcend religious and secular educational divides and improve student connection in the face of loneliness.
