Abstract

Description

This project was completed in collaboration with the University of Minnesota, the City of Minneapolis, and the Stadium Area Advisory Group based on a directive from the Minnesota Legislature to prepare an analysis of neighborhoods bordering the University of Minnesota as part of the May 2006 financing bill for an on-campus stadium. M3D provided mapping and technical analysis assistance to the project. M3D staff produced maps to help determine where University employees live and their impact on University neighborhoods. Data indicate that less than 5% of all University of Minnesota employees live in its four surrounding neighborhoods, while 28% of all University of Minnesota employees live in the city of Minneapolis. Although there is not a large percentage of University employees living in the designated University neighborhoods, the maps do show that University employees tend to live in communities closer to campus. Few appear to be commuting in from outer ring suburbs. These data support the need for more affordable housing and higher quality of living standards for these neighborhoods. Healthy University neighborhoods will help to attract talented faculty and staff to the University and will ultimately support the stability and strength of its surrounding communities. The M3D data helped inform the University Neighborhood Impact Report.
