This report presents U.S. Census data for the Longfellow community over the 60 years from 1940 to 2000 and analyzes the data for trends and differences between the community and the city of Minneapolis as a whole, as well as between different areas of the community. The major areas covered include total population changes, race and ethnicity (particularly White to non-White ratio, Black and African American population, and Hispanic or Latino population), foreign-born population characteristics, employment and labor force characteristics (including manufacturing employment and women in the labor force), income distribution, educational attainment, housing characteristics, and means of transportation to work. The data presented and analyzed in this report are based on official decennial Census data. Much of it has been adjusted to account for incongruities between the boundaries of the Longfellow community and the census tracts.
