Abstract
In my 3,750-word review essay "Hershel Parker's 2008 Intellectual Biography of Melville, and Walter J. Ong's Thought," I highlight Parker's triumphant intellectual biography Melville: The Making of the Poet (Northwestern University Press). In addition, I connect certain aspects of Melville's life that Parker discusses with relevant points in the mature thought of the American Jesuit Renaissance specialist and cultural historian Walter J. Ong (1912-2003; Ph.D. in English, Harvard University, 1955).
