A summary of the proceedings of a symposium held on June 23, 2000, at the University of Minnesota's Earl Brown Continuing Education Center. The symposium focused on the relationship between social justice principles and the child welfare system for the 21st century. The proceedings include an historical overview of the child welfare system, reflections and commentary on the social justice/child welfare nexus, reports on challenges and crises in the child welfare system, a comparative analysis of child welfare in Britain and the United States, a panel discussion on child welfare, and reflections from the field on new directions in child welfare policy.
