Abstract

This report discusses the engineering aspects of selecting or designing devices for lake aeration or mixing. A summary of frequently used aeration and/or mixing devices is presented. Bubble dynamics and oxygen transfer principles are described to provide the reader with an understanding of the basic processes and mechanics of aeration. The basic design parameters for a lake aerator are presented. The principles and parameters discussed are applied to a metalimnetic aerator design. Experiments performed to determine the external flow characteristics of a meta1imnetic aerator are presented.
