Outcome-Based Indicators for Waste Reduction

Abstract
This project was completed in partnership between Ramsey/Washington Recycling & Energy (R&E) and the University of Minnesota’s Resilient Communities Project (https://rcp.umn.edu/). The goal of this project was to research existing models and tools that can help calculate waste reduction and recycling numbers and translate them into more easily understandable climate and community impacts, beyond weight or volume measures. R&E project lead Leigh Behrens collaborated with a team of students in Steve Kelly and Laura Bishop’s course PA 5771: Change Leadership for Environmental, Social, and Governance Action to research case studies and propose recommendations for communicating environmental, social, and economic outcomes, as well as metrics for quantifying behavior change. A final student report and presentation slides from the project are available.
