Abstract
The Natural Resources Research Institute (NRRI) Economic Geology Group was contracted by
the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) [Project Number 0005269] to provide
onsite drilling supervision, core logging and sampling, and geochemical studies related to
proposed construction along Highway 169 east of Soudan, Minnesota. The goal of this project
was to provide MnDOT the data required to produce a mitigation plan for the Highway 169 Eagles
Nest project. MnDOT, working with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and
Golder Associates, was responsible for developing the guidelines for this work with the help of
the Highway 169 Technical Working Group (Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, Minnesota
Department of Health, US Corps of Engineers, Environmental Protection Agency, and NRRI).
Golder Associates (Seattle, WA office) was responsible for developing the mitigation plan for
bedrock roadcuts along the reroute. This work was a continuation of the studies by Severson and
Heine (2010, 2012) and Heine (2015) which examined the bedrock outcrops along three proposed
Highway 169 reroutes and alternatives. Severson and Heine (2012) concluded that drilling would
be needed in the potential bedrock roadcuts along the reroute corridor to fully characterize the
geology as required in the mitigation plan.
Description
This report contains links in the Appendices to additional documents, originally stored electronically in Google Drive. These files have been attached to this record along with the report. Appendix A is a zipped folder containing the original Microsoft Excel spreadsheet (.xlsx), which has also been converted to .csv files (1 .csv file per sheet; 7 sheets total in the original file). Appendix D is a zipped folder containing 186 subfolders with 1589 JPEG image files total. Appendix E is a zipped folder containing 182 pdf files. Appendix F is a zipped folder containing the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet (.xlsx), which has also been converted to .csv files (1 .csv file per sheet; 2 sheets total in the original file). The .csv files do not retain the formulas, filtering, or formatting of the original .xlsx file. Columns may need to be widened to show entire number. Appendix G is a zipped folder containing 165 subfolders with 504 JPEG image files total. Appendix H is a zipped folder containing 48 pdf files and 1 Microsoft Word (.docx) file; 47 of the pdf files were original and the remaining 1 was created by converting the Microsoft Word (.docx) file to pdf. Appendix I is a zipped folder containing 170 pdf files and 1 Microsoft Word (.docx) file; 169 of the pdf files were original and the remaining 1 was created by converting the Microsoft Word (.docx) file to pdf. Appendix J is a zipped folder containing 48 pdf files. Appendix K is a zipped folder containing the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet (.xlsx), which has also been converted to .csv files (1 .csv file per sheet; 4 sheets total in the original file). The .csv files do not retain the formulas, filtering, or formatting of the original .xlsx file. Columns may need to be widened to show entire number. Appendix L is a pdf file.
