Abstract

Gabriel Fauré delayed the composition of a string quartet, the most prestigious genre of chamber music, until the final years of his life. Weighing both the force of tradition and the pressing need for innovation, this work considers the various historical and stylistic influences that may have contributed to Fauré's creative process within his Op. 121 string quartet.
