Abstract

The evidence in this systematic review suggests that there is a small benefit to treating acute sinusitis with antibiotics in patients who have been symptomatic for at least 7 days compared to placebo. However, the clinical benefit is less pronounced, noting that 80% of the patients who received placebo improved in the same time period. Clinicians should use their judgment in weighing patient benefits versus patient and population risks when deciding whether to prescribe antibiotics.
