Abstract
Description
Many neighborhood organizations lack sufficient citizen involvement in community efforts or sufficient organizational capacity to design and implement strategies for community improvement. The Minneapolis Training Program for Neighborhood Organizers (MTPNO) provides in-depth group training, individual follow-up sessions, and networking groups to prepare neighborhood community organizers to build community leadership and a solid foundation for neighborhood organizations. This program evaluation analyzes four neighborhood organizing efforts led by community organizers who were students of MTPNO to answer the question, What do effective community organizers do to successfully develop neighborhood involvement in projects that address key concerns of the neighborhood? The four case studies include (1) Longfellow Community Council's effort to address traffic and parking issues connected to the Hiawatha Light-Rail Project, (2) North Minneapolis Southeast Asian Initiative's effort to create and disseminate an emergency language interpretation card for Hmong immigrants, (3) St. Paul District 10 Community Council's efforts to influence reconstruction plans for the Hubert H. Humphrey Job Corps Center in the Como Park neighborhood, and (4) a collaborative effort among four St. Paul community organizations to involve Hmong, Latino, and Somali parents in the St. Paul District School Choice Forums.
