Abstract

Violence against women (VAW) is considered a human rights violation in the eyes of the international community. Statistics show high numbers of reported VAW in many areas around the world but there are many forms of violence that go unreported. In the case of Ecuador, Ecuador suffers from high rates of VAW but recently made efforts in the last year to end VAW in its many forms. In 2018, a Comprehensive Organic Law to Prevent and Eradicate Violence Against Women was passed to amend and improve Ecuadorian society, lifestyle and institutions to end VAW. With a focus on the ability of victims to move through the justice system, from reporting to sanctioning, this paper takes an initial glance on the ability of women to utilize this law. It is through this exploration that we see the challenges with the new law.
