Abstract

Hemorrhoids and hematochezia is a common occurrence in individuals less than 50 years old without specific risk factors for colon cancer. However, the recommendations for evaluation of these individuals tend to vary. At this time it is recommended that flexible sigmoidoscopy is the most reasonable choice for evaluation because there are a significant number of lesions within the colon, and the majority of these lesions exist in the distal portion, beyond the splenic flexure.
