Description

The Center for the Study of Politics and Governance sponsored a series of public forums with the major party candidates for Minnesota Governor fostering informed and substantive discussion of important matters of public policy. The forums created an opportunity for the candidates to rise above the talking points and fractious back-and-forth of the campaign to address the important policy challenges facing Minnesota and the country. Representative Tom Emmer gave a presentation on education. The presentation was followed by a short discussion between Professor Lawrence R. Jacobs and Representative Emmer, along with a Q&A from the audience. The conversation was moderated by Professor Jacobs. Representative Tom Emmer is the Republican candidate for the 2010 Minnesota gubernatorial election. Representative Emmer was born in South Bend, Indiana and grew up in Edina, Minnesota. He attended St. Thomas Academy college-preparatory school, located in Mendota Heights, Minnesota. He later went on to receive his bachelor of arts in political science from the University of Alaska-Fairbanks in 1984 and his juris doctor from William Mitchell College of Law in 1988. Emmer was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2004, representing District 19B, which includes portions of Wright and Hennepin counties. He was later reelected in both 2006 and 2008. Emmer currently serves on the Finance Committee, the Health Care and Human Services Policy and Oversight Committee, and the State and Local Government Operations Reform, Technology and Elections Committee.
