Abstract

My 5,700-word review essay is about the American Jesuit classicist Claude Pavur's 2019 book In the School of Ignatius [Loyola]: Studious Zeal and Devoted Learning (Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts: Institute of Jesuit Sources). For interested readers who are not familiar with Jesuit education in the United States, I provide ample background information, and then I discuss how Claude Pavur could have opened up his study by drawing on certain relevant points in the thought of the American Jesuit Renaissance specialist and cultural historian Walter J. Ong (1912-2003; Ph.D. in English, Harvard University, 1955).
