Abstract

Fifty years ago, a group of University of Minnesota students took over Morrill Hall. They demanded the establishment of an Afro-American studies program, funding for a black conference and development of a Martin Luther King Jr. scholarship. The University eventually agreed to the demands, leading to the creation of the Department of African American and African Studies, funding for the black conference and increased support for black students on campus. This episode reflects on the 24-hour takeover of Morrill and the role of student activism in our current society.
