Abstract

Description

This project was completed in support of the University (of Minnesota) Northside Partnership. M3D data were analyzed to help determine where North Minneapolis workers and residents were traveling to and from to their place of employment, what types of employment opportunities are available in these communities, and in what industries residents in these communities were employed. This analysis strives to highlight opportunities to narrow 'spatial mismatches' within these communities by determining where discrepancies exist in resident and worker wages, commute patterns, and employment opportunities. The data show that North Minneapolis residents tend to travel shorter distances to their place of employment than do North Minneapolis workers. North Minneapolis workers also appear to earn incomes considerably higher than residents of the community (35% of its workers earn $40,800+ in comparison to 18.5% of its residents). Furthermore, there appears to be nearly twice as many resident workers than employment opportunities in these communities.
