Exploring Cultural Bridges Through Music Composition: A Journey of Resilience and Connection

Abstract

This dissertation embarks on an exploration of music composition as a conduit for cultural understanding and social reflection, set against the backdrop of tumultuous times marked by a global pandemic and a profound reckoning with racial injustice following the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Through a series of three compositions; Bridges, an orchestral work for youth orchestra and soloists, Echoes of Gakaabikaang, three pieces set to the poetry of Sasha Maria Suarez, and Through You, a cross-genre work with vocal soloist, these three compositions navigate the complexities of cultural identity, memory, and the transformative power of music. Each composition, deeply rooted in personal and collective experiences, serves as a testament to music's ability to bridge divides, foster community, and promote healing. In this dissertation I reflect on my journey of resilience and connection as a Black composer in Minneapolis with the aim to contribute to a broader understanding of music's role in cultural dialogue and education. Through analytic and reflective examination of these compositions, and incorporating feedback from performers and audiences, these compositions underscore the impact of music in challenging times, offer insights into its potential to enrich music education and advocate for a more inclusive and empathetic society.
