Abstract

ABSTRACT Introduction: The uptake of teledentistry use has been slow compared to telemedicine use. Little is known about factors associated with teledentistry use among the general population. This study used the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) constructs, including attitudes, norms, and behavioral intention, to explore factors associated with the intention to use teledentistry among prior telehealth users. Methods: This study analyzed the attitudes and social norms of 485 prior telehealth users related to the intent to use teledentistry using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations. Regression analysis was used to predict the relationship between the intention to use teledentistry and attitudes, social norms, and demographic factors. Results: The multivariate analyses found independent associations (p≤0.05) between attitudes and social norms and the intent to use teledentistry (p<0.0001 and p<0.001, respectively). Participants with higher levels of education were less likely to consider using teledentistry. The intent to use teledentistry increased with age (p<0.0001). In contrast, there was no association between living in dental professional shortage areas and intent to use teledentistry. Conclusion: This study examined the association between prior telehealth use and intent to use teledentistry. The participants’ attitudes and social norms were identified as factors that affect their positive or negative intentions towards specific behaviors. Participants with higher levels of education were less likely to consider using teledentistry. Older age was positively associated with intent to use teledentistry. These findings could be used to explore the impact of targeted education for older adults and campaigns to promote teledentistry use for all as a viable option when needed.
