Abstract

Each February, a nationwide international Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM) is held. Contestants have 96 hours to select from one of two problems and submit a solution. This year, two teams represented UMD. One team selected PROBLEM A: The Keep- Right-Except-To-Pass Rule, to develop a model to determine whether this is an effective rule in promoting better traffic flow, or whether some other rule might be better. The other team selected PROBLEM B: College Coaching Legends, to build a mathematical model to choose the best college coach or coaches from among either male or female coaches in such sports as college hockey, field hockey, football, baseball, basketball, or soccer. The teams will discuss the contest problems, their proposed solutions, and their overall experience with the competition.
