Abstract

Description

Gale Woods Farm is part of the Three Rivers Park District. Situated on 410 Acres in Minnetrista, Minnesota the park features a working educational farm, access to Whaletail Lake, a picnic pavilion and numerous cross country trails. Gale Woods is focused on connecting people to the source of their food on a small diverse farm that uses sustainable, contemporary farming methods. Programs can be adapted for a variety of different ages and can be scheduled for a half day, full-day or multi-day experience. The farm includes a production scale Community Supported Agriculture garden, a teaching garden, teaching and learning barn, and numerous pastures for grazing Galloway cattle, Border Leicester, Finn, and Clun Forest sheep, a Great Pryenees sheep-guarding-dog, and both egg-laying and meat chickens. The farm provides opportunities for visitors of all ages to enjoy experiences that enhance their understanding of agriculture, food production and land stewardship. This report develops an educational curricula that teachers can use both at the farm and in their classrooms to create an awareness of farming and food production and agricultural practices that focus on environmental stewardship. The electronic version of the report that can be downloaded from this page as a 'zipped' file includes the MS Access database created as part of the project. The database is also included in the reference version available at the CURA Resource Collection.
